New Hanover Busted Mugshots
A mugshot is just an ID photo. It gets taken during booking into jail. The booking record around it can hold a lot. Expect the displayed name, a booking number, the date and time, and the arresting agency. It may also list charges as booked, bond, court dates, release status, and physical descriptors. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Detention Division runs the county detention system. Arrests can come from several directions, though. Wilmington Police, Carolina Beach Police, Wrightsville Beach Police, Kure Beach Police, and other agencies all make arrests or start the incident record themselves.
The sequence usually runs from arrest to a magistrate appearance. Intake and booking come next. A custody entry follows. A 2024 county vendor document describes the intake handoff and a jail-management system that tracks bookings, charges, court appearances, daily counts, and release history. Not every field shows up on a public page. So the online view gives only a partial picture of the full record.
Read the charges carefully. A booking entry captures what was written down at intake, and the final outcome belongs to the court file, not the jail roster.
New Hanover Booking Record Fields
A public P2C result often shows only part of the underlying record. Treat the standard field list as a checklist, whether you are reading an official result or drafting a specific request to the Sheriff. Descriptors like height, weight, and tattoos exist to identify a record. A bond amount is a release condition. Neither one tells you anything more than that.
| Field | What it can tell you |
|---|---|
| Name and identifiers | Displayed name, booking or inmate number, and any official alias, age, or date-of-birth fields the interface supplies. |
| Booking event | Booking date and time, arresting agency, jurisdiction, holding facility, and release date if recorded. |
| Charges | Each charge as booked, statute or code when shown, offense level, and warrant or case number. These can change. |
| Bond and release | Bond amount or type, conditions, hold or detainer notation, and a release or transfer status when displayed. |
| Photo | Whether an image is displayed and whether it is labeled booking or identification. New Hanover has not published a promise that every result includes one. |
| Court | First-appearance or court date, division, and directions to eCourts for later events and disposition. |
Write down your access date and the source URL. Leave a blank field blank. Do not copy from an aggregator site that may carry old or wrong data. Ask the Sheriff directly instead. Request the exact piece you need, whether that is the booking record, the arrest sheet, the charge list, the photo, or the release record.
Request New Hanover Booking Records
The Sheriff's Information Requests page points public-records users to the Open Public Records Request portal under North Carolina Chapter 132. No booking-photo fee is published. No guaranteed turnaround time is either. Ask up front about any copying or staff-service charge. Ask for an estimated response date too. If an image gets withheld, request the specific basis, whether a statute, court order, or policy, along with any non-exempt fields that can still be released.
- Write the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and state that the request concerns a booking or detention record.
- Give the full name, approximate booking date, arresting agency, booking or case number if known, and exact items requested.
- Ask for the fee, estimated response time, and any redactions or withholding reason before narrowing the request.
- Keep the submission, acknowledgement, response, and source date together for later court or correction work.
Sheriff records route
New Hanover County Sheriff's Office
3950 Juvenile Center Road
Castle Hayne, NC 28429
910-798-4200
Send public-records requests through the online Information Requests portal. The 911 records route at 230 Government Center Drive handles 911 material only, not booking photos.
Court records live elsewhere. Contact the New Hanover County Clerk at 316 Princess Street, Wilmington, NC 28401. Or call 910-772-6600. The Sheriff's own page routes court disputes and court records to the Clerk. Keep a booking request and a court-record request separate. Different custodians hold them. Mixing the two only slows things down.
North Carolina Mugshot Law
North Carolina law frames what counts as public. N.C. Gen. Stat. § 132-1 broadly addresses public records. § 132-1.4 separates criminal-investigation records and lists the arrest information the public can see, with limits. § 15A-502 covers identification photographs and fingerprints in specified arrest and detention circumstances. A legal photo on file is no promise, though. The Sheriff need not display it on P2C.
No enacted state statute sets a commercial booking-photo removal deadline. There is no pay-to-remove penalty either. Bills proposed in 2023 and 2025 never became current law. If an official record is wrong, identify the entry and ask the Sheriff for a correction. If a court grants expunction or sealing, hand the order to the Sheriff and to each publisher. RecentlyBooked publishes a free legal-record policy. Mugshots.com describes a court-order route. But aggregator practices change, and no live page can be promised removal.
Skip any unknown service that promises deletion for a fee. Save the URL and source date. Work the official correction or expunction path first. Then ask the publisher to update its copy. Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool can refresh a search result after a source page changes or comes down. It cannot touch the Sheriff's record, though. It cannot force a live publisher page offline either.
- Booking
- The intake process that creates a custody record after arrest or commitment.
- Disposition
- The court’s later result, such as dismissal, plea, judgment, or another resolution.
- Expunction
- A court-ordered process that removes eligible records from public view under the applicable law.
How to Find Busted Mugshots
Match the source to the custody question. For anyone currently held in the county, the official P2C jail inmate inquiry is the first stop. No current Sheriff page promises a photo on every result, so follow whatever labels the live form actually shows. Save the date you searched. If the result is missing or thin, fall back on a records request.
- Check the county P2C inquiry for the name and available custody fields.
- For Wilmington, Carolina Beach, or Wrightsville Beach, check the arresting police department’s report channel as well as the county custody source.
- Use New Hanover eCourts resources to follow the case, first appearance, hearings, and disposition.
- If the person was sentenced into state custody, search NCDAC Criminal Offender Searches.
- Request the specific booking record or photograph from the Sheriff when the online path does not answer the question.
Someone released from custody may vanish from a current-inmate list. The booking or case record can still sit with the agency. A blank search result has many explanations. Release, transfer, or a spelling mismatch could be the cause. So could a juvenile or sealed matter, expunction, or a different jurisdiction. A missing name means only that the search came up empty.
Where New Hanover Mugshots Appear
Start with the official sources. Always. Third-party publishers can help you confirm a name or date, sure. But they copy their data. They drop releases. Stale images linger, and some use a different date convention. None of that replaces the real anchors: P2C, the Sheriff's records portal, the Clerk, or NCDAC.
| Channel | Photo or record? | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff P2C | Current-custody inquiry; photo not guaranteed. | Search the live county form and note the access date. |
| Sheriff records portal | Targeted record or photo request. | Give the name, date, agency, and exact item. |
| NCDAC | State custody status; public photo not guaranteed. | Use for sentenced state prisoners, probationers, or parolees. |
| eCourts | Docket events and disposition, not a mugshot source. | Use the Clerk for official copies. |
| WECT, WWAY, Port City Daily | Selected news stories; photos may be agency-supplied. | Use a story as context, then verify the official record. |
| RecentlyBooked, Busted Newspaper, Mugshots.com, Arrests.org, and Mugshots.zone | Unofficial copied or archived material. | Use only as a lead. Check freshness, identity, release, and disposition. |
New Hanover mugshots also surface on several third-party sites. None of them share an authority or a schedule. RecentlyBooked offers a rolling window of recent entries. Mugshots.zone keeps dated archives. Arrests.org puts dates right on its pages. Busted Newspaper holds a broad county archive, while the Mugshots.com material skews older. Labels and coverage shift over time, so check more than one place. The Sheriff’s Office page is the official agency starting point. The Detention Division page adds facility and intake context. Open the official Sheriff source before trusting a copied listing.

The agency page is where P2C, records requests, and official contact details live. Review the Sheriff information-request route when you need to go through official channels.

When the live roster does not show the record or image you need, put your request in writing. That written request is the fallback path.
Busted and Booked County Roster
The New Hanover P2C jail inquiry shows who is in custody right now. It is not a full history of every arrest in the county. Nor is the field set guaranteed. Names, booking numbers, dates, agencies, charges, bonds, court details, release dates, and descriptors should all be confirmed in the live result. Treat them as possibilities, not promised features.
| Search or result item | Local caution |
|---|---|
| Name or identifier | Try spelling variations shown by the form and compare more than one field. |
| Custody status | Current custody is different from a past booking or a state sentence. |
| Photo | No Sheriff source reviewed promises an image for every result. |
| Release or transfer | Removal from the current list does not erase the underlying record. |
- Open the official P2C URL and read its current instructions.
- Search with the available name or identifier fields, then record the source date.
- Compare the result with eCourts and the arresting city agency when the event involves Wilmington, Carolina Beach, or Wrightsville Beach.
- Use the Sheriff’s Information Requests portal for a missing record or photo.
Booking and intake run around the clock at the Detention Division. No fixed public posting cadence exists. A person typically enters county custody after a magistrate appearance, which is why a city police report can surface before a county booking entry does. The current jail sits at 3950 Juvenile Center Road in Castle Hayne. It was occupied in 2004. So references to older jails may point to earlier downtown sites. See the official Detention Division context for yourself.

The facility page helps you tell intake and custody information apart from a city police incident report. They are different documents with different sources.
Busted Last Night? Check Timing
No official 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, or weekly booking feed exists for the county. P2C is the dependable custody endpoint, not a chronological same-day list. A fresh booking can sit in intake and data entry for a while. Someone released after booking drops off the current-custody display. Note the time you searched. If timing matters, ask the Sheriff for the booking record. Wilmington P2C handles incident reports, not booking photos. Carolina Beach’s Citizen Connect link redirects to a generic page. Wrightsville Beach wants report requests in person and posts no arrest blotter. Those gaps are the real answer. Resist any site that invents a feed.
Recent does not mean current. A secondary “recent arrest” entry reflects a booking event, not where the person is held right now. Check P2C for present custody.
Official Alerts and Sheriff App
The official New Hanover County Sheriff NC app on Google Play and its Apple App Store listing cover communications, crime reporting, anonymous tips, and public-safety news. Neither promises a jail roster or booking photos, so treat the app as a news and tips tool rather than a mugshot channel. The Sheriff’s Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube links likewise show no recurring booking-photo schedule. N.C. SAVAN connects North Carolina jails with Adult Corrections and sends custody alerts by phone, email, text, or TTY using a confidential PIN. Its statewide number is 877-627-2826. VINE Mobile offers another status reference. Neither system is a public photo database, and an alert subscription is not a P2C search.
NCDAC Offender Search
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction locator covers current state prisoners, probationers, and parolees, with historical records back to 1972. It does not track ordinary New Hanover County jail custody. A county arrest may never reach NCDAC at all, since a release pretrial or a local outcome keeps the person out of state custody. Searches run by name or offender ID. Per NCDAC’s tips, an offender ID has seven numeric digits, a docket number can carry a county code, and a transportation number starts with T plus six digits. Never guess an identifier. Photos are not guaranteed on every profile. New Hanover Correctional Center at 330 Division Drive in Wilmington is a separate minimum-security NCDAC facility, not the county detention roster. Open NCDAC’s official offender search information.

Use this state source only after the custody question moves beyond the county jail.
Booked, Released, or Transferred
One name can move through several record systems. The state of custody decides which official source helps. A current roster result, a past booking, a court disposition, a state sentence, federal custody, and ICE detention are not interchangeable.
| Custody state | Best starting source | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Current county custody | Sheriff P2C | Whether the person is represented in the current county jail inquiry. |
| Released or transferred | Sheriff records request and eCourts | Whether a retained booking or later court record can be obtained. |
| Sentenced state custody | NCDAC | State prison, probation, or parole status. |
| Federal or ICE custody | BOP or ICE locator | Distinct federal or immigration custody, with no promised public photo. |
State Archives retention rules schedule identification photos not made part of a case file for possible office destruction after three years. Inmate incarceration records follow a three-year period after release or transfer. Photos tied to a case follow the case-history schedule instead. Keep in mind these are retention rules. They promise nothing about any web page staying visible.
After the Busted Booking
What happens right after a busted booking? State law answers that. Under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 15A-511, officers must bring the arrested person before a magistrate without unnecessary delay. The magistrate covers the charges, explains rights, weighs probable cause, and sets the terms of release. Later steps have their own names. An arraignment is the court appearance where the case and plea process move forward, while a disposition is simply the final court result. One caution: a release date marks a change in custody, nothing more.
For case details, start with New Hanover eCourts and then ask the Clerk of Court for an official copy. The portal often lists parties, events, hearings, and dispositions, but its own FAQ states it is not the official court record. When you pull a file, compare the case number, the charge as originally booked, any later charge changes, dismissals, pleas, judgments, and the date of the last event. Those details tell the real story of a case.
A busted booking leaves a paper trail. The roster entry and mugshot both point to a single event: the day of the arrest itself.
City Busted Mugshots
New Hanover runs a shared detention system. People arrested by municipal departments can land in the same county facility. That split matters, because a city police report and the county custody record may sit in separate systems entirely. The three city pages here follow the top three incorporated places in the 2020 Census counts. Kure Beach stays covered under the countywide agency explanation.
- Wilmington Busted Mugshots covers WPD’s incident/report path and the county jail handoff.
- Carolina Beach Busted Mugshots covers police records, the unverified Citizen Connect lead, and county custody.
- Wrightsville Beach Busted Mugshots covers approved report access and the absence of a verified public arrest log.
Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and Kure Beach each maintain their own police contacts. The jail is a different matter. Anyone committed to the county lockup should be checked through Sheriff P2C, no matter which city made the arrest. Local news can help too, since it connects the city agency with bond amounts, jail status, and court dates. For the record itself, though, the official sources remain the path that counts.
